A deferment is a postponement of payments for specific
reasons. Generally, those who borrowed their first Stafford Loans on
or after July 1, 1993, are eligible to defer payments if they're
enrolled at least half-time at an eligible school; unemployed; in a
graduate fellowship program; in a rehabilitation training program
for people with disabilities; or suffering economic hardship.
The qualifications for deferment on loans made before July 1,
1993 may differ from those listed above. For example, borrowers who
received loans made before July 1, 1993 may qualify for deferment
for full-time enrollment, medical internships, and military service.

deferment of payments.
Deferment requests must be made by speaking or writing
directly to us. To apply for a deferment, you may download the
appropriate form, complete and sign the form, and mail the form to
us. In many cases, you will need to have the deferment form
certified or attach additional documentation to it before returning
it.
Remember that each deferment request must be approved before
your payments will be postponed. If you have questions about
deferment or prefer to ask us to mail a deferment form to you,
contact us by email or call the Repayment Information Center at
800/722-2838.
